Welcome to the
Old English Sheepdog Club of America’s
Open Health Registry

In July 2006, the OESCA Board voted to establish an Old English Sheepdog Registry with CHIC, the Canine Health Information Center.  In June 2007, the OESCA membership made history with a vote to establish a Voluntary Open CA Registry.  These milestones for our breed exemplify the commitment of breeders and owners to the health and welfare of Old English Sheepdogs.

There are presently several registries in place that we utilize through the CHIC registry and therefore do not wish to duplicate with the OESCA Open Health Registry: Picture-1

  1. OFA for hips
  2. CERF for eyes
  3. OFA for thyroid
  4. OFA for heart
  5. OFA for elbows
  6. OFA - BAER test for hearing

Our goal in designing the OESCA Open Health Registry is to have a multi-disease registry that will educate and encourage OESCA members to share health information and make wise choices when breeding. We strive to use the advice of the top experts and scientists in the pertinent fields for each disease included in the Open Health Registry.  Dr. Jerold S. Bell is our consultant for Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA), the first disease included in the Open Health Registry, and he is solely responsible for designation of dogs as affected. All names listed in the Registry are voluntarily submitted by the present owner or breeder of the CA affected dog.

Our Mission:

  1. To provide a central site to record health data on all Old English Sheepdogs;
  2. To provide a user friendly, open database for pedigree research;
  3. To record the rate of occurrence of many genetic diseases;
  4. To encourage all Old English Sheepdog breeders and owners to participate in health registries and databases for the reduction and prevention of disease.
